In the Beginning...
Restaurant
Motel
Way back in 1940, three Sheldon brothers who were in the
lumber business at the time, traveled around Virginia to locate a logical
spot to build a motel and restaurant to capitalize on the growing travel
and leisure market. The trio settled on a piece of land in Southside Virginia
at the intersection of highways 15 and 360. The business was open 24 hours
a day and a restaurant building and motel rooms were completed just before
the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. The war years were difficult for
everyone as rationing caused many shortages and labor became a problem
as the war effort attracted many men who worked for us. As a result Sheldon's
was forced to curtail the hours of operation late one night as no help
arrived for work. The owners realized that no one had a key for the front
door so they nailed it shut that night. After several years Sheldon's
closed briefly until someone leased the property until the end of the
war when Buck Sheldon returned. He soon met Frances Dixon, married, and
the rest became history.
